
How does a newborn see?
Vision is still immature at birth. Babies respond to light, prefer faces and high-contrast patterns and see best at close range. Over the following weeks, focusing and tracking a moving object become more consistent.
Visual development during the first year
- 0–2 months: adapting to light, brief fixation and interest in faces.
- 2–4 months: steadier tracking and better coordination of the eyes.
- 5–8 months: depth perception, face recognition and hand–eye coordination develop further.
- 9–12 months: vision increasingly supports movement, reaching and exploration.

Why can a baby’s eye colour change?
Iris colour depends mainly on the amount and distribution of melanin. In many babies, pigmentation continues to develop after birth, so the eyes may become darker during the first months. Genetics determines the final shade, which stabilises gradually rather than on one fixed date.
Which signs need attention?
Contact a paediatrician or paediatric ophthalmologist if you notice a persistent eye turn, a white pupil reflection, marked light sensitivity, constant watering, unusual eye movements, a drooping eyelid, or if the baby does not look at and follow faces or objects as expected for age.
How parents can support visual development
Face-to-face interaction, high-contrast toys, safe floor play and objects at varying distances naturally encourage visual exploration. Special “vision exercises” are not needed unless medically recommended.

Brief instability can occur very early. A persistent or frequently recurring eye turn should be assessed by a paediatric ophthalmologist.
Can the final eye colour be predicted?
Not with certainty. Inheritance is complex and the shade may continue to change for months.
