“Unfortunately, this is the best result we can achieve,” were the words of the ophthalmologist after our last visit. We’ve been seeing him regularly for the past four years, ever since my father was diagnosed with macular degeneration. And his condition keeps getting worse. The treatment with injections and corrective glasses can only achieve a maximum vision of two-tenths.
Living with Macular Degeneration
For my father, however, this was not a good result at all. A former university professor, always buried in books, active, full of life. Now, all he did was listen to the radio. Reading or watching TV was impossible. Such a condition changes a person – it drags them down emotionally, makes them give up.
Many patients with macular degeneration experience psychological struggles, even depression in some cases, due to losing their independence. My father lived alone in the countryside. But ever since the problem started, we had to take him in.
I was very worried knowing he was alone and could need help at any moment. Unfortunately, as time went by, I saw him becoming more withdrawn and sad. So, I started looking for solutions beyond what the doctor had suggested.
Low Vision Aids at “The Optical Center”
Everything seemed hopeless until my sister-in-law told me about the Optical Center. She had taken her father-in-law to the store at Mavili Square, where they found a wide range of products for macular degeneration. They discovered a magnifying glass that helped him read bills and newspapers again – something that greatly lifted his spirits.
So, I called them. They told me they specialize in low vision aids and that there were solutions that could significantly improve my father’s condition. This gave me hope, and we scheduled a free product trial.
The store had a great atmosphere. The staff was young, polite, and helpful. After discussing my father’s condition and what he wanted to achieve, they recommended some products to try.
There were magnifying glasses with various magnifications, with stands or handheld, many with additional lenses to further enhance vision. After much effort and patience, we found a magnifier that, combined with his glasses, allowed him to read full sentences – an incredible improvement! We also found special TV glasses that brought the image much closer.
My father’s mood changed completely. I hadn’t seen him this excited in a long time. At the Optical Center, he found valuable aids for macular degeneration, and his daily life improved dramatically when he had lost all hope.
Now, four years later, he can read his old essays again and enjoy his Sunday newspaper. It takes time and patience, but he manages – something he could never have imagined before. He listens to the radio less now because he prefers watching the morning news on TV with his new glasses.
We even watch movies together now. He has come back to life, and next week, we are planning to take him back home. He still needs his cane to move around, but he is independent again.
