When Presbyopia Hits… Multifocal Glasses or One for Distance and One for Close-Up?
Everyone kept telling me, “Thanos, just get glasses already, you’re not answering our messages because you can’t see them!”
And then, the day finally comes when you look at your phone and realize you can’t see ANYTHING…
“But a second pair, Thanos?” I thought, “You already have glasses for myopia. Are you really going to take one pair off and put the other on every time?”… Such a hassle. So, I avoided it for a long time, and my kids would laugh when I handed them my phone to read my messages for me.
Eventually, I made the big decision… and off I went to the opticians!
Some said, get a separate pair for reading, and you’ll be fine. Others said, you’ll need one pair for reading on your phone and another for the computer, because that’s a different distance and the reading glasses won’t work for that.
Then others told me to get multifocal glasses—they’re the last glasses you’ll ever need! They’ll cover everything at once, the best solution for all your tasks!
Some, however, were against multifocal glasses: “They cause dizziness and are inconvenient; they’ll be the last glasses you’ll ever need, don’t get them,” they told me.
So much information, so many prices, so many brands, so many opinions… total confusion.
Multifocal Glasses at Mavili
Finally, I arrived at The Optical Center in Mavili Square.
I spent quite a bit of time with the experienced opticians—people with real knowledge, eager to help, and explain exactly what I needed. Young people, full of enthusiasm and smiles.
We discussed my daily needs. They explained how multifocal glasses work and in which situations they’re not the ideal solution.
So, at The Optical Center, I made my first multifocal glasses!
How did I decide? I simply realized that no one else had explained it to me before!
I finally understood what multifocal glasses are, who needs them, and how to use them properly.
I understood why there are such big price differences between multifocal glasses. And I realized that they’re not for everyone. Maybe that’s why some people say, “Don’t get multifocals…”
For a real estate agent like me, who needs both distance and close-up vision simultaneously, they’re perfect and the right solution.
7 Things I Learned:
- I have to wear multifocal glasses all day. But that doesn’t bother me since I already wear my myopia glasses all the time.
- They also give me mid-range vision, which helps me on my computer.
- From now on, I’ll need to learn to move my head when I look around, instead of just moving my eyes.
- They take some getting used to—at first, they might cause a little dizziness until you learn how to move your head correctly.
- They will definitely free me from switching between glasses.
- It’s something that requires thorough research. I’m glad I took the time to look into it because it’s an investment for at least the next four years. And at The Optical Center, you have a guarantee that if you don’t get used to them, they’ll replace them with two separate glasses for free.
The “Last” Glasses You’ll Ever Need?
I also realized that they’re not the “last” glasses I’ll ever need. After a busy day with houses, I like to relax lying down watching TV. In that position, multifocal glasses don’t work. From that angle, your eyes are in the close-up field of the glasses, so you can’t see far away—to the TV. So, I realized I’ll still need my distance glasses for those relaxing moments.
With the help of the staff at The Optical Center, I learned a lot more about multifocal glasses, but I won’t bore you with it. It’s best to let them explain it to you… they’re still there.
The bottom line is that I’ve found them incredibly convenient for daily use. My kids no longer laugh at me for not being able to read my phone, and I’ve even been an example for my friend Lena, who also got a pair.
