There are cases where neither multifocal glasses nor two separate single-vision glasses suffice. In these instances, special lenses are necessary. This was the case for Petros below:
“The console is demanding. All day in front of it, I need to coordinate so much for the program to run smoothly. Without the required focus and clear vision, it’s impossible.
When I started struggling to distinguish the small buttons in front of me and headaches began, I knew something was wrong with my eyes.
After visiting the ophthalmologist, I was officially diagnosed with presbyopia.
So, I rushed to the nearest optical shop and bought one of those ready-made glasses every respectable presbyopic person has, hoping they’d help me.
However, the next day at work was tough. I had to switch between distant and near glasses, which wasn’t practical for keeping track of all the screens. At the same time, I had difficulty with the middle distance of the console.
After days of frustration and failing to adapt to my new reality, I returned to the ophthalmologist. This time, he said, ‘Get multifocal glasses, one pair for all distances, and you’re done.’
Back to the optical shop. It was an expensive investment, but I thought, ‘Petros, you won’t do this every day; you must do what’s best for your eyes and work.’
In the end, though, the money was wasted. When I looked through the edges of the lens, the vision wasn’t clear. I had to maintain a very specific posture and head position to see properly. My optician said, ‘Petros, that’s how multifocals are. You’ll get used to them.’ I NEVER got used to them!
For me, it seems multifocal glasses didn’t work.
Of course, it took me a while to understand why, and I struggled.
Glasses at The Optical Center
After a lot of research and questions, I arrived at The Optical Center. That’s where my questions were answered, and I found the right solution for me.
The experienced opticians there told me that multifocal glasses are practical for everyday life but not for specific specialized jobs. After analyzing my type of work, daily needs, and the purpose of the glasses, we concluded that the lenses I needed weren’t multifocals but specialized lenses. These have entirely different fields of vision, customized and made specifically for each customer. I chose a triple-focus lens, which doesn’t distort anywhere and gives me the comfort I need to see clearly at all those distances.
Since then, I’ve found my peace. I monitor all the screens at the same time, each through the special window of my lenses.
Triple-focus special lenses
That’s when I realized that before any purchase, a lot of research is necessary. The most important thing is to find specialists who will explain what others didn’t, so you can find what suits you, rather than blindly following what every doctor or friend suggests.
That’s what I found at Optical Center, and that’s why I’ll never change optical stores again.”
What are specialized lenses?
The term ‘specialized lens’ is not always clearly defined in the optical industry.
Generally, lenses for eyeglasses are referred to as ‘specialized’ when:
a. They exceed +/- 10 diopters.
b. They have special optical fields different from those found in bifocal or multifocal glasses.
At Optical Center, we specialize in making glasses with custom lenses that deviate from the typical degree scales and vision fields.[:]
