Vision requirements for military schools
Admission to a Greek military academy depends on more than examination results. Candidates also undergo preliminary assessments that include a medical examination. Visual acuity, refractive error, colour vision and general eye health may be assessed differently depending on the academy and specialisation.
Ortho-K: clear daytime vision without glasses
Orthokeratology lenses are worn during sleep and temporarily reshape the corneal surface. In suitable candidates, they can temporarily reduce myopia and astigmatism so that high uncorrected visual acuity may be achieved during the day without glasses or conventional contact lenses.
This can be particularly interesting for a candidate who wants to reach the required level of vision. Results vary, however, and Ortho-K does not override official eligibility rules. Corneal topography, a complete assessment and individual fitting are essential.
What aspects of vision may be examined?
- visual acuity in each eye, with or without correction,
- myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism,
- colour perception and binocular vision,
- conditions affecting the cornea, retina or optic nerve,
- previous eye surgery, where relevant.
Requirements are not identical for every academy. Certain highly demanding roles, including some Air Force specialisations, may apply stricter criteria.
Does myopia automatically mean rejection?
Not necessarily. Some academies may accept corrected vision, while others also consider the amount of refractive error. Because limits are defined in each official announcement, an old table found online should never be treated as definitive.
What about laser surgery and orthokeratology?
Refractive surgery and orthokeratology lenses do not guarantee eligibility. Whether previous surgery is accepted, which methods are permitted and how much time must have passed depend on the academy and the current rules. Orthokeratology provides temporary correction and must be disclosed in the candidate’s medical history.
Do not undergo surgery or change contact-lens treatment solely for admission without first obtaining current information from the relevant authority and a complete ophthalmological examination.

- Read the current announcement and its medical appendices in full.
- Arrange a complete examination with an ophthalmologist well in advance.
- Keep previous prescriptions, examination results and surgery records.
- Do not stop wearing contact lenses without following your doctor’s instructions.
- Ask the relevant academy for clarification if a requirement is unclear.

Can an optical store certify eligibility?
