In dim light, the eyes rely more heavily on the rod cells of the retina and need time to adapt. Glare, an outdated prescription, dry or scratched lenses and certain eye conditions can make night vision noticeably more difficult.

Why vision becomes harder in low light
When illumination falls, the pupil becomes larger and contrast decreases. Fine detail and colours are harder to distinguish, while glare from headlights can feel more intense. Age, astigmatism, cataracts and retinal conditions may further reduce visual performance.
1. Allow time for adaptation
After bright light, avoid moving immediately through an unfamiliar dark space. Dark adaptation is gradual and may take several minutes. Lowering screen brightness before going outside at night can also reduce the sudden transition.
2. Improve lighting at home
Use even, well-directed light without harsh shadows. Add night lights near stairs, hallways and bathrooms. Task lighting is useful for reading, cooking and medication labels.

3. Reduce glare
Keep spectacles, windscreens and mirrors clean. Replace heavily scratched lenses and adjust car mirrors correctly. An appropriate anti-reflective coating may improve comfort for some spectacle wearers.
4. Check your prescription
Small changes in myopia or astigmatism often become more noticeable at night. An up-to-date vision check is the first step before considering special filters or new lenses.
5. Drive conservatively
Reduce speed, increase following distance and avoid driving if you do not feel confident that you can see safely. Make sure headlights and windscreens are clean and correctly maintained.
6. Do not ignore new symptoms
New, one-sided or progressively worsening difficulty in darkness may require assessment. Cataracts, retinal disorders and other causes cannot be diagnosed from symptoms alone.
Do yellow night-driving glasses help?
Yellow or amber lenses reduce part of the light reaching the eyes. Some users may perceive a change in contrast, but these filters are not a universal solution and can leave less light available at night. Correct prescription, clean optical surfaces and safe driving habits remain the priorities.
When should you arrange an eye examination?
